INTERVIEW WITH MARTINA

BLOG - MODELING

6 Questions with our
New Face – from Italy

Ciao Martina!

1. How did you start modelling? What's your model story?

My older cousins were already modeling in a local agency and as soon as I was 18 I had my first job too, it was an imitation step and a bit of an escape from the University choice that I was terrified to take. I did start it in the end, but modeling remained a necessary space for playfulness and imagination.

2. If your family & friends were to describe you in 3 words what would they be? Are they true?

Grandma says moody and it’s true. Impulsive, also true but I think (and hope this isn’t wishful thinking) the things I decided impulsively, looking back couldn’t not have been done, they were probably already sedimenting inside. And sensitive, I think that’s true too.

3. We know you're Italian; what is one thing from Italy that you miss when you travel to other places?

Culturally, but really tied to my experience of living in the province, I miss being able to sit in a square without the city washing over you like a hurricane. Cities bigger than Padova, where I live, tend to feel too chaotic for me, except for Venezia, where I study, because the presence of water and the fact that you can only get around on foot slow you down to a human rhythm.

4. What are your top 5 essentials? They can be items, cosmetics, clothing, food, etc. Things you are loving at the moment or things you can't live without.

I’ll take it wide: Phoebe, my dog; my grandma’s ring; a necklace with a tiny stone, and a sketchbook. Also a good book.

5. Can you tell us a bit about your hobbies? What do you like to do in your free time?

More than hobbies, they’re things I try to cultivate constantly enough to keep them alive. One is Muay Thai, I still remember the first punch on my cousin’s pad, and the first sparring, where I almost had a panic attack because my nervous system wasn’t used to my body being under attack. But it also triggered an unexpected adrenaline, joy, and recognition that I still feel. The other is oil painting.

6. Do you have any role models or people who are inspirations in your life? Would you mind to share a bit about them and their influence on you.

I’d say some people who are joyful and who have cultivated enough inner freedom. Goliarda Sapienza and her characters have recently been growing some of that space in me, but the people I’ve had the chance to meet who I admire in that sense are the most important sources. Mostly some teachers I met through school and acting, and friends, through relationships that shaped the perception of things and ideas the most.

Among painters I particularly appreciate the works of Clare Thackway, Emma Hopkins, Owain Hunt, Jess Allen, Jenna Gribbon and also John Singer Sargent and Antonio Donghi, among many others.
